Popular Dog Names

Over the years, the popularity of traditional dog names - such as Spot, Rover and Fido - has waned and people are now more likely to name their dog after their favourite celebrity, clothing label, film character or even their favourite drink!

  • Coco
  • Prada
  • Gucci
  • Chanel

  • Levi
  • Bentley

Celebrity names for dogs have also become popular. Sports stars, and the names of popular fictional characters from films, are also a regular choice for new pet owners. Some of the most popular in the UK are:

  • Mr Darcey
  • Bella

However there is one traditional dog name that continues to ride high in the dog name popularity charts, and that is Max.

But a recent survey saw Max knocked off the top spot by the name Bella - thanks to the popularity of the Twilight series of vampire books and films. Also in the top 40 were the names:

  • Ben

  • Oscar
  • Barney
  • Sam
  • Holly
  • Charlie
  • Lucy

There are some names that appear to be popular with specific breeds of dogs, For example, the most popular names for Chihuahuas include Angel, Baby, Tinkerbell and Tiny.

Golden Retrievers, popular pets with families, tend to have more traditional names such as Amanda, Delilah, Dusty, Harlow and Goldie.

Yorkshire Terriers are known for being little dogs that love attention and some of the most popular names for these little dogs are Baby, Little One, Nipper, Rascal and Bambi.

Celebrities have also joined the trend in using unusual names for their furry friends. Paris Hilton has Chihuahuas called Tinkerbell and Bambi; Joss Stone has a dog called Dusty Springfield; Ashlee Simpson’s dog is called Blonde; Kelly Osbourne had a little dog called Piglet while Reese Witherspoon’s dog is called Frank Sinatra.
